In recognition of this event, we are celebrating specific women in construction and highlighting the importance of including women in the industry\u2019s workforce.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-ee6108e7-e7ea-41be-90c3-bb5efb8edfaa\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ql-heading\" data-block-id=\"block-905347d4-25a4-4682-a556-b30a6ea78e79\">Women Thrive in the Construction Industry<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-9e73298c-a35b-458c-9fc8-5ece044186d6\">Women have a history of thriving in industries that are \u201cnot traditionally\u201d welcoming to women. <a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/women-at-work-during-world-war-ii.htm#:~:text=During%20World%20War%20II%2C%20millions,schools%2C%20hospitals%2C%20and%20offices.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">During World War II, while men went overseas to fight, women stepped up to fill the jobs that men worked<\/a>: factories, shipyards, transportation industries &#8211; you name it, women did it! After the war ended, women continued to explore these nontraditional paths for employment, and showed the world that there is no industry too hard or too \u201cdirty\u201d for a woman to excel in!<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-730d03bb-9c81-4eeb-a902-a0ed99bd3ae0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-307cbc28-f210-4407-a299-4c92cafeddc9\">Despite the incredible capacity for women to contribute to construction, the industry is still overwhelmingly dominated by men; <a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/cps\/cpsaat18.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">women hold only 10.9% of the construction jobs in the United States<\/a>. Organizations like <a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.new-nyc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Non-traditional Employment for Women<\/a> and the <a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tradeswomentaskforce.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tradeswomen Taskforce<\/a> are working to change that.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-834d203c-6041-4a16-9249-0a876d77d2d6\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-bdf0be94-1965-4b96-9556-6ea81236f30c\">Working in the construction industry has a myriad of benefits that women can and should take advantage of. For example, construction firms are celebrated for <a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/nawic.org\/about-nawic\/statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shrinking the gender pay gap<\/a> for their employees; women earn 95.5% of what men earn in the construction industry, compared to the 82.9% national average. Women should be encouraged to join the construction industry workforce, not just for their own stability and benefits, but for the betterment of the industry overall.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-d466d3ad-0044-476f-afe1-44b3532c5b26\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ql-heading\" data-block-id=\"block-f68b0e27-4493-44ea-ba48-99551479abae\">Highlighting Women\u2019s Contributions to Construction<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-adabb094-09c0-4caf-a554-f656bfefdd6e\">What better way to celebrate Women in Construction week than to highlight the contributions and successes of women across the industry. Here are a few examples of women excelling in the construction industry and their incredible contributions:<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-b3d9dad7-2f65-4e1b-b2e4-db7dbc6d6c0c\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-c7f6745e-8607-46e0-9d19-c155e4d31aa6\"><em><a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/lillian-moller-gilbreth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lillian Gilbreth<\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-ddd9e36e-eb3b-491c-bd47-73df258d3560\">Lillian Gilbreth was an award-winning designer who created many staples in household appliances that are still in use today, including refrigerator shelving and adding a foot pedal to the kitchen trash. She also pioneered specific kitchen designs for individuals with disabilities.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-94fd35a9-7250-44c9-99a8-3b18035541a4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-be851fe7-3d2e-4114-85e7-57a30c7b9091\"><em><a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/849-22\/mayor-adams-first-deputy-mayor-grillo-depart-administration-early-new-year-thanks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lorraine Grillo<\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-72f4898c-c68d-475a-b3df-0f95f5a830c2\">Lorraine Grillo was the president and CEO of the New York City School Construction Authority, where she oversaw the design and construction of public school buildings in New York City. Most recently, Grillo served under Mayor Eric Adams as the First Deputy Mayor. To summarize her career and qualifications, Grillo once said \u201cI build things; that\u2019s what I do.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-c087eecb-12a3-4735-8f84-24d7f7bfccff\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-a915b6c9-440e-4460-8fba-42bb2c7f5012\"><em><a class=\"ql-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Emily-Warren-Roebling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emily Roebling\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-3b4cb1b2-7bce-47fc-adb5-cfd934997a8e\">In 1872, Emily Roebling\u00a0 took over her husband\u2019s position as the chief engineer, overseeing the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Despite her husband retaining the formal title, Emily\u2019s contributions to the project were made public and enabled her to break the glass ceiling for women in trade work<\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-d83a2f61-cc5e-4552-a3c5-354caa282b75\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ql-block\" data-block-id=\"block-1571c9ae-1fbd-4d71-96fe-aedbdb47ad54\">Women have made momentous strides in obtaining equal representation in the construction industry.
